Institutional Website
I designed and developed the institutional website for A-GRUPA, a network of women urban planners based in Portugal. The website runs on WordPress with a custom theme I built for the project.
Audience and Language
A-GRUPA works with Portuguese municipalities, local communities and partners in European Union programmes. The content is published in European Portuguese and English to serve both audiences. Each language has its own URL structure, with the English version under /en/. Separate URLs allow each version to be indexed by search engines and shared directly in the language of the recipient. The language switcher sits in the header of every page and leads to the equivalent page in the other language, which keeps the user at the same point of the website when changing language.
Navigation
The website is organized in six sections (Início, A-Equipa, A-Metodologia, A-Proposta, Projetos and Contacto). On mobile, the navigation collapses into a button labeled “Menu” in text. I used a text label instead of an icon because a word is unambiguous for users of all ages and levels of familiarity with web conventions.
Home Page
The home page alternates short paragraphs with images. Each paragraph presents one idea, which keeps the reading in short blocks. The fields of work are presented as a list to allow quick scanning by prospective partners.
Projects
The Projects page documents six projects carried out between 2021 and 2025. Every project follows the same structure, with title, location, year, description, A-GRUPA’s role, partners and press coverage. Municipalities and programme consortia evaluating a collaboration look for the type of work performed, the partner institutions and the funding programme. A fixed order places this information in the same position in every entry and allows comparison between projects. The role of A-GRUPA is stated separately from the project description because the projects are carried out with partners, and the reader needs to identify which part of the work was done by the network.
Photo Galleries
Each project is documented with its own photo gallery. The photographs open in a lightbox with previous and next navigation. Thumbnails keep the page length manageable with 71 images, and the lightbox displays each photograph at full size without leaving the page.
Performance
All images are served in WebP format to reduce page weight on mobile connections.
